While Teflon® and other related chloro-fluro polymers
have been around for years many people are not familiar with their
application and uses.
Specialty
polymer coatings offer a reasonable resistance to abrasion and chemical
resistance to many parts that are used in harsh services. Since the basis
of the material
is
plastic the coated surfaces are never indestructible. Typically the
coating are suitable for service for a finite period of time. At the end
of the life cycle of the coating the parts can normally be stripped and
recoated. Quite often the parts can be coated many multiple times before
the base part has to be retired.
Polymer
coated parts are used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, semiconductor and
aircraft industries for various reasons and properties. While medical
usage is very popular, recent court cases and decision have caused the
industry to back off from aggressively pursuing applications for coatings
on parts related to the medical devices.
Coatings
range in thickness from a few thousandths of an inch thick to a few
millimeters thick. Most are coatings are applied using a powder spray and
cured with heat in a bake oven. Like most plastics the coating normally
have a limited upper end working temperature and abrasion resistance
almost always decreases with temperature.
We have
been involved with this industry long before SiVad was created and have
engineering successful designs into some of the most unusual products and
environments
